Using Art as a catalyst for Change
I’m Ina Khai, a interdisciplinary artist whose work is a vibrant reflection of African Diasporic cultures and an elevation of marginalized voices. My artistic practice spans watercolor painting, music, dance, theater, writing, photography, and video production—each medium a unique thread in the tapestry of my storytelling.
Art became my sanctuary and a rediscovery of self when I began painting in 2019. It awakened forgotten skills and unearthed an unshakable confidence and peace, encouraging me to lean into my other creative disciplines. My journey is a testament to the power of art as both a healer and a catalyst for growth.
My creative process mirrors the fluidity of watercolor—bold washes of color layered and shaped into narratives that challenge perspectives and celebrate resilience. This approach is deeply personal, a reflection of my voice as an artist and my vision for a more inclusive and empathetic world.
Guided by my sociology degree from Columbia University, my work draws inspiration from movements like the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Arts Movement, Black Feminist Thought, and Hip Hop. As a creative sociologist, I weave cultural and societal exploration into my art, merging identity, spirituality, and justice into every project.
Whether through a brushstroke, a frame, or a lyric, I channel empowerment, spirituality, and Black feminist thought, crafting art that invites connection and sparks meaningful conversations. My passion lies in transforming the personal into the universal—bridging self-discovery and social justice in a way that resonates with others.
I am a cultural explorer. My art is an invitation to engage with themes of spirituality, self-discovery and social justice, fostering connection and sparking meaningful conversations.
